Using Modern Acupuncture to Help Heal

For thousands of years, acupuncture has been the go-to method to relieve pain and correct a variety of physical disorders without the use of drugs or suffering nasty side effects. Today, many medical professionals see amazing results for their patients by combining this ancient healing art with Western bio-medicine. Our chiropractor at La Ruffa Chiropractic & Sports Rehab in Jupiter, FL, offers our patients acupuncture on its own, or as a supplement to existing treatment modalities.

But Don't Acupuncture Needles Hurt?

The answer is no.

For many people who never had acupuncture treatment before, the idea of being stuck with needles seems scary. It isn't. The needles used during a treatment session are much smaller than a needle used to give shots, typically no bigger than a human hair, and they are very shallowly inserted into the body. Most people find that they are hardly aware of any discomfort at all.

What You Can Expect at Your First Acupuncture Treatment Session

After talking with your acupuncturist about your medical history and current symptoms, the treatment session can begin. Depending on your medical issue, the acupuncturist may ask you to change into a medical gown before lying down or facing up on a padded table. The acupuncturist will then explain everything to you while probing your skin to determine the best locations to insert the needles. Feel free to ask any questions you may have during the process.

After inserting the last needle, you have to wait for around 15 minutes for the treatment to take full effect. During that time, you may feel the acupuncturist make slight adjustments to the needles by turning them or modifying their depth. Relax, close your eyes, and breathe slowly. There is a good chance you will find the sensation very soothing, and it is not uncommon for patients to doze off during treatment.

At the end of your session, the acupuncturist will remove the needles, and you can go back to your day immediately.

What Can Acupuncture Treat?

Traditionally, people used acupuncture to treat a range of conditions from the flu to mental disorders. Today, most patients use this healing modality to lessen the symptoms and relieve the pain associated with musculoskeletal injuries and disorders. A few of the most common reasons patients turn to acupuncture include:

  • Frozen shoulder
  • Lower back pain
  • Knee pain
  • Neck pain
  • Postoperative pain
  • Sciatica
  • Tennis elbow
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
