Herniated Disc Treatment

Herniated discs are common and can be painful and debilitating. This condition is also referred to as a slipped disc or ruptured disc. There are many factors that can cause herniated discs. At La Ruffa Chiropractic & Sports Rehab, serving Jupiter, FL, our chiropractor can diagnose the cause of your herniated disc and provide treatment. Our goal is to alleviate your pain and help your body heal.

Herniated Disc

What Is a Herniated Disc?

A herniated disc is an issue that usually occurs when the discs in your back begin to wear out. With this particular condition, the interior of your disc (nucleus) pushes through an opening in the outer shell of your disc (annulus). The contents of discs are similar to jelly. However, despite their texture, discs have the potential to irritate your surrounding nerves and soft tissue.

Herniated Disc Symptoms

As a result of a herniated disc, you may have pain, numbness, weakness, and a burning sensation around the site of the disc herniation.

If the disc is in the lower portion of your back, the contents of it could irritate the nerves that control your legs. As a result, you may notice the numbness, weakness, and pain will extend throughout your legs.

On the other hand, if the affected disc is in the top of your back or neck, you could have nerve-related symptoms that extend down one of your arms.

Most herniated discs reduce your range of motion and make it painful to bend or twist the back.

Causes of Herniated Discs

Your discs become more sensitive and vulnerable to injury as you age. Since these discs start to become less flexible, you could sustain an injury to your disc when you move in a certain manner. Lifting, twisting, or turning while lifting could all contribute to a herniated disc.

You're more at risk for this issue if you're overweight, smoke, or have a job that keeps you overly active or has you sitting for prolonged periods of time.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Our chiropractor will perform a comprehensive physical exam to look for the cause of your herniated disc pain. After a proper diagnosis, we will create a treatment plan for you. This often includes chiropractic adjustments and spinal decompression. Realigning and stretching the spine allow the disc to move back into place, alleviating pain. We also provide physical therapy and massage therapy to help your body recover after a herniated disc.
