Dry Needling
Dry needling is becoming a more common procedure used to treat impairments in movement and pain. During this process, a dry needle is inserted into the muscle. It is called a dry needle because it does not have medicine in it. You may also hear it referred to as trigger point dry needling or intramuscular manual therapy. Dry needling is not the same process as acupuncture, although it is commonly confused with it. If you are interested in dry needling and live in the Jupiter FL, area, contact La Ruffa Chiropractic & Sports Rehab to schedule an appointment.
What are Trigger Points?
Trigger points are areas where the muscle is tight within a larger group of muscles. These areas may be tender when you touch them. When you touch this area, it may cause pain in other parts of the body. When a trigger point is stimulated with a dry needle, it releases. Releasing trigger points will relieve your pain, improve your mobility, and improve your body’s natural ability to heal itself.
What Happens During Dry Needling?
Thin filiform needles are used for dry needling. These needles are inserted into the skin to stimulate the trigger points and tissues under the skin. Using needles allows therapists to reach areas that they would not be able to get with their hands. Protective equipment and gloves are used during this process. The needles are sterile and disposed of properly after use.
